Elite Talks X RMIT Night was successfully held on 8th Apr 2019 at RMIT Storey Hall. Speakers from RMIT was invites to launch a forum to discuss the trend between academics and work with the theme – THE FUTURE Pi π.
Four speakers stand from different backgrounds to share their perspective for the future work trend:
‘Being an expert in one field is never enough.’
– CHAMINDA RANASINGHE
Mr Chaminda talks about the evolution of work. He combines breadth with two separate domains of deep expertise, doing many jobs within a few fields. He claims the future students need to have knowledge and skills in multiple areas in a flexible capacity; therefore, they could re-skilling and re-learning all the time.
‘Technology makes everyone a designer.’
– Dr. JENNY UNDERWOOD
Dr Jenny has spoken of the changes and innovation in the fashion industry, from the introduction of Sewbots, in-demand manufacturing to Kniterate. She also named several skill sets that will be crucial in the future fashion industry that will help us deal with changes in fashion design, consumerization and experience.
‘Future career and blockchain are mutually influential.’
– Prof. JASON POTTS
In Prof. Jason’s speech, he talks about the influence of technology in general and blockchain in particular to the economy. He also states about how blockchain affects the music industry and visual arts world.
‘Ability is more important than academic.’
– Prof. XINGHUO YU
The last speaker, Prof. Xinghuo, narrowed down the topic to the qualities required to thrive in a Complex World, with a scenario where the technology hadn’t evolved as we see today. He believes skill and knowledge are essential, but be resilient and collaborative is also the key.
In the end, there is a panel discussion session for student asking questions. Lots of students participated actively, to show their interest and understanding into the future work topic.
